Auckland Museum Visits Elm Park

Today Room 20 had the opportunity to learn about volcanoes from the Informative Auckland Museum team. 

We started off by learning about the different volcanies around Auckland. Did you know there are now 53 volcanoes here in Auckland? Most of them are extinct but some, like Rangitoto, are just dormant and could become active in the future.

    

Next, we learned about the different types of eruptions that can occur and the different rocks that be formed during an eruption. Some of the rocks were pumice, scoria, obsidian, basalt and lava bombs. We looked at samples of rocks and had to test our memory and see if we could remember all the names and label the samples correctly. 


                  


The last activity we had to do was to imagine we were in an eruption and react quickly to pack a bag full of essential items. We only had 30 seconds to do this!
We worked in teams and made some smart choices of what need to go into our bags. We even remembered to take a cat with us!

Animal Information Reports

Since the start of the term, Room 20 has been learning a lot about animals for our Inquiry. 

In writing, we have worked hard to write information reports on a variety on animals. Our goal was to write a book to teach others about these amazing creatures. 

We used Book Creator to publish our writing.

Dragons - Were they real?

We have been reading How to Train your Dragon by Cressida Crowell as our classes shared novel this term. We have loved learning about vikings and the different dragons.

Some of us have been doing some research to find out more about these fantastical creatures and if they were in fact real.

Tinker Time - Makey Makey








This week we have been exploring with electronics. 

Makey Makey is an electronic invention kit. The Makey Makey allows you to take everyday objects and combine them with the internet. Using the alligator clips attached to any conductive material you can control the keyboard of your computer, such as the space bar, arrow keys and left click of the mouse.

We are starting to understand how electricity works, how a current passes through objects and wires, and what things conduct electricity. We were surprise to learn that humans can be conductors of electricity too

Tinker Time - Spheros

Its Term 2 and in Room 20 we have started Tinker Time. On Friday afternoons we explore new technologies and have a go at programming, coding, designing, and having some fun with the cool new gadgets our school has to offer. 

Today we tied out some Spheros. The cool round robots are controlled by out Chromebooks. We to manoeuvre them around mazes, drive them around a race track and even played some Sphero golf!

We Went to the Zoo Just the Other Day!

On Monday 10th May, Room 20 along with Rooms 19, 21 and 22 went on a trip to the Auckland Zoo. 

On our trip to Auckland Zoo we got to see lots of different animals from all over the world, including Giraffes, Elephants, Red Pandas, Otters, Siamangs, Ring Tailed Lemurs and American Alligators. 

It was a great trip because we got to look for and learn about animals adaptations! For example, Giraffes have very long necks so they can reach up to eat the leaves in the tall trees in the Savannah, this makes it easy for them to find food and they don't have to compete with other animals who usually east closer to the ground. Giraffes' patterned fur also helps them camouflage easily in the wild to hide form predators. Spider Monkeys only have four fingers to help them to grip and swing between branches. Meerkats have thick padded feet to help them move about easily on the hot ground.
